  1. 01

    GitHub Copilot

Best overall, and the smallest move: Cursor is a VS Code fork, so VS Code with GitHub Copilot is the most familiar switch. You get chat beside your code, an Agents window to delegate and track several sessions across projects, and a choice of agent harness (Copilot, Anthropic Claude or OpenAI Codex). You can use your Copilot plan's models, bring your own API key or connect a local model, and add MCP servers, agent skills and plugins. Copilot CLI, the GitHub Copilot app and cloud agents that open pull requests cover work outside the editor. Free includes limited chat and agent use; Pro is $10/mo ($15 of AI credits), Pro+ $39/mo ($70) and Max $100/mo ($200). Business is $19 and Enterprise $39 per user/mo. Code completions don't use AI credits.

    ๐Ÿ’ณ Free plan; Pro $10/mo; Pro+ $39/mo; Max $100/mo; Business $19/user/mo; Enterprise $39/user/mo (approx.)
  2. 02

    Claude Code

Best for agent-first work: if you mostly hand Cursor's agent big, multi-file tasks, Claude Code does that from the terminal, VS Code and JetBrains extensions, a desktop app and the web. It reads your codebase, edits files and runs commands, and it also works inside VS Code forks, including Cursor, if you want to keep the editor during the switch. It needs a paid Claude plan (it isn't on Free) or a Claude Console account: Pro is $20/mo ($17/mo billed annually), Max from $100/mo, and Team Standard seats $25/seat/mo ($20 billed annually).

๐Ÿ’ณ Included with Claude Pro ($20/mo US), Max (from $100/mo) and every Team seat (from $20/seat/mo billed annually), or pay via API usage (approx.)
  3. 03

    OpenAI Codex

Best if you already pay for ChatGPT: Codex comes with ChatGPT plans and runs on the web, in the CLI, in an IDE extension and on iOS. The extension works in VS Code, Cursor and Windsurf, and Xcode and JetBrains IDEs have their own integrations. Free and Go ($8/mo) cover quick, lightweight tasks; Plus ($20/mo) is sized for a few focused coding sessions a week; Pro is $100, $200 or $500/mo; Business is $20/user/mo billed annually ($25 monthly, 2+ users).

๐Ÿ’ณ Limited on ChatGPT Free and Go ($8/mo); Plus $20/mo; Pro from $100/mo; Business from $20/user/mo (annual); or API usage (approx.)
  4. 04

    Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

Closest like-for-like IDE: Windsurf, now called Devin Desktop by Cognition, is the other big agentic VS Code-style editor. It pairs a full IDE (Tab completion, inline edits, debugging) with an Agent Command Center for local and cloud agents, and connects other agents over the Agent Client Protocol (ACP). Free has a light agent quota plus unlimited Tab completions and inline edits. Pro is $20/mo with frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, cloud agents (Devin Cloud) and extra usage at API pricing; Max is $200/mo; Teams is $80/mo plus $40 per full dev seat, up to 200 users. Quotas refresh daily and weekly.

๐Ÿ’ณ Free tier; Pro $20/mo; Max $200/mo; Teams $80/mo + $40 per full dev seat (approx.)
  5. 05

    Zed

Best fast, open-source editor: Zed is a native editor written in Rust for macOS, Windows and Linux, and its AI is optional. The free Personal plan gives unlimited use with your own API keys or external agents such as Claude Agent and Codex, which install from the ACP registry (Copilot, Cursor and OpenCode are there too) and handle their own billing. Pro is $10/mo with unlimited edit predictions and $5 of hosted-model tokens, then API list price plus 10%, with a 14-day free trial. Business is $30/seat/mo for org-wide AI and data-sharing controls; SSO, SAML and SCIM aren't available yet.

๐Ÿ’ณ Personal free (own keys or external agents); Pro $10/mo with $5 of tokens; Business $30/seat/mo (approx.)
  6. 06

    Cline

Best open-source agent: Cline (Apache-2.0, about 70,000 GitHub stars) runs as a VS Code extension, a CLI, a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, and an SDK. It makes multi-file edits with diffs and checkpoints, runs terminal commands, plugs into MCP servers, and asks for approval at each step, with a Plan mode before it acts. It's free for individual developers: bring your own API keys (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, OpenRouter, local Ollama and more) or pay for inference at cost through Cline. ClinePass ($9.99/mo, optional) stretches usage on popular open models. Enterprise adds SSO, team management and the JetBrains extension.

๐Ÿ’ณ Free / open source; pay for AI inference (BYOK or at cost); optional ClinePass $9.99/mo; Enterprise custom (approx.)
  7. 07

    Google Antigravity

Best free tier from a big lab: Google Antigravity is an agent-first platform with an IDE, an app for managing agents, a CLI, editor extensions and an SDK. The free individual plan includes a range of agent models, unlimited Tab completions and command requests, with basic weekly rate limits. Google AI Pro ($19.99/mo in the US) and Ultra (from $99.99/mo) raise those limits, add a flexible AI credit pool and include Gemini 4 Argon. Companies on Google Cloud can buy it through Gemini Enterprise (Standard and Plus from $30/seat/mo) or pay as they go.

๐Ÿ’ณ Free for individuals (basic weekly rate limits); higher limits with Google AI Pro ($19.99/mo) or Ultra (from $99.99/mo) (approx.)

Why builders are looking at Cursor alternatives

Cursor still has a free plan and paid plans from $8 to $200 a month, but the plans changed. Each tier now includes one pool of AI usage shared across Cursor and Grok, refreshed weekly. Plus ($8/mo) only includes Grok models. Third-party models such as Claude and GPT bill separately at API list price, and you get those on Premium ($30/mo) and up, which also add cloud agents, Bugbot code reviews and code hosting through Origin. Teams starts at $30/user/mo. If you mainly want Claude or GPT models, or a different editor, the tools above may be a better fit for the money.

How to choose

Want the least change? Use VS Code with GitHub Copilot (free to start, Pro $10/mo). Want another agentic IDE like Cursor? Try Windsurf / Devin Desktop (Pro $20/mo). Mostly delegate big tasks to an agent? Claude Code (Claude Pro $20/mo) or Codex (ChatGPT Plus $20/mo), and both run inside the editor you already use. Want speed and no lock-in? Zed with your own keys is free, and Cline is free plus whatever tokens you use. Want the most free usage to start? Google Antigravity and Copilot Free. Live in IntelliJ or PyCharm? See our JetBrains guide; JetBrains AI starts free and AI Pro is $10/mo.

Also considered

JetBrains AI (AI Free with unlimited completion; AI Pro $10/mo, AI Ultimate $30/mo) is the pick if you work in JetBrains IDEs; we ranked it separately. Kiro has a free tier with 50 credits a month and paid plans from $20/user/mo (Pro) to $200 (Power). Aider is still a solid open-source terminal agent with automatic git commits, but development has slowed: the latest release (v0.86.2 on PyPI) is from February 2026, and its GitHub repo hasn't had a commit since May 22, 2026. Continue is no longer an alternative to Cursor: Cursor acquired it, its homepage now says it has joined Cursor, and its last release shipped on Jun 19, 2026 (the Apache-2.0 code stays on GitHub).

Frequently asked questions

What is the closest alternative to Cursor?

Windsurf, now Devin Desktop, is the closest like-for-like: another agentic VS Code-style IDE with Tab completion and built-in agents, with Pro at $20/mo. If you just want to stay in VS Code itself, GitHub Copilot (Free, or Pro at $10/mo) is the smallest change.

Is there a free alternative to Cursor?

Yes, several. GitHub Copilot Free in VS Code, Google Antigravity's free individual plan (basic weekly limits) and Windsurf / Devin Desktop Free (light agent quota, unlimited Tab) cost nothing. Zed's Personal plan and Cline are free too, but you pay your model provider for the tokens you use.

Can I use Claude Code or Codex inside Cursor?

Yes. Claude Code's VS Code extension works in VS Code forks, including Cursor, and OpenAI's Codex extension lists Cursor as a supported editor. So you can switch the agent first and decide about the editor later.

Is Continue still a Cursor alternative?

No. Continue was acquired by Cursor. Its homepage now says it has joined Cursor, the last release shipped on Jun 19, 2026, and the Apache-2.0 code remains on GitHub for anyone to fork. For a maintained open-source agent, look at Cline.

What's the cheapest paid alternative to Cursor?

Among paid plans, GitHub Copilot Pro and Zed Pro are both $10/mo, and ChatGPT Go, which includes light Codex use, is $8/mo. For heavy agent use, Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are $20/mo, the same as Windsurf / Devin Desktop Pro.
