Claude Code on each Claude plan (checked Oct 18, 2026)
| Plan | Price | Claude Code? | Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No | Claude's pricing page lists Claude Code as not included on Free. |
| Pro | $20/mo, or $17/mo billed annually ($200 up front) | Yes: terminal, VS Code and forks like Cursor, JetBrains IDEs, the desktop app and the web | At least 5x Free's usage per 5-hour session, plus a weekly limit. Shared with Claude chat. |
| Max 5x | $100/mo (monthly only) | Yes | 5x Pro's usage per session, a weekly limit and priority access at busy times. Includes $100/mo of Claude Platform API credits, which can't be used in Claude Code. |
| Max 20x | $200/mo (monthly only) | Yes | 20x Pro's usage per session. Includes $200/mo of API credits, which also can't be used in Claude Code. |
| Team Standard | $25/seat/mo, or $20 billed annually (2 to 150 seats) | Yes, every seat | More usage than Pro, plus SSO, central billing and admin controls. |
| Team Premium | $125/seat/mo, or $100 billed annually | Yes | 5x the usage of a Standard seat. Team plans include up to $500/mo of pooled API credits, which can't be used in Claude Code. |
| Enterprise | $20/seat/mo billed annually (20-seat minimum) plus usage at API rates | Yes, included with the seat on new and self-serve plans | No per-seat usage limits on usage-based plans; admins set user and org spend limits. SCIM, audit logs, role-based access. |
| API (Claude Console), pay as you go | Per token: Sonnet 5.5 $2 in / $10 out, Opus 5.5 $4 / $20, Haiku 5.5 $0.10 / $0.50 per million tokens | Yes | No subscription; billed per token at standard API rates. Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry bill through your cloud account. |
Prices in USD, excluding tax. Max is billed monthly only, and app-store pricing can differ. Haiku 5.5 prices are for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. On every subscription plan, Claude chat and Claude Code draw from the same usage pool. Anthropic's docs put the average Claude Code cost across enterprise deployments at about $13 per developer per active day ($150 to $250 a month).
Why builders look for Claude Code alternatives
There's no free way in: Claude Code isn't on Claude's Free plan, so the cheapest option is Pro at $20/mo. Every plan's usage resets on a rolling five-hour window with a weekly limit on top, and Claude chat, the desktop app and Claude Code all draw from that one pool, so a long coding session leaves less for everything else. Max ($100 or $200/mo) is monthly only, and the API credits that come with Max and Team plans can't be spent in Claude Code. It also only runs Anthropic's models. Other reasons people switch: they want a free tier to start, one subscription that covers models from several labs, an agent built into GitHub's issues and pull requests, or an open-source tool that bills only for the tokens they use. One gotcha if you stay: when an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code uses that key instead of your subscription and you pay API rates.
The alternatives, ranked

GitHub CopilotBest all-rounder, and the cheapest way to keep Claude models: Copilot runs in VS Code and other editors, on GitHub itself, in a desktop app and in the terminal through Copilot CLI, which GitHub includes on every plan, Free included. Copilot CLI works with your issues and pull requests over GitHub's MCP integration, has a plan mode, and runs parallel subagents with /fleet. Free is $0 with 2,000 completions a month plus limited chat and agent use on auto model selection. Pro is $10/mo (1,500 AI credits) and includes Claude Sonnet 5.5; Claude Opus 5.5 and Fable need Pro+ ($39/mo, 7,000 credits) or Max ($100/mo, 20,000), which can also hand tasks to third-party agents like Claude by Anthropic and OpenAI Codex. Business is $19 and Enterprise $39 per user/mo. Verified students get Copilot Student for free.
- 02
OpenAI CodexClosest like-for-like if you already pay for ChatGPT: OpenAI's Codex is the same kind of agent, with an open-source CLI (Apache-2.0, about 130,000 GitHub stars), an IDE extension, cloud tasks, GitHub code review and Slack, and it now lives in the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux. Free ($0) and Go ($8/mo) get GPT-6 Luna at Standard speed in the desktop app (subject to rollout). Plus ($20/mo, the same as Claude Pro) adds Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE and on iOS, with GPT-6.1 Sol. Pro is $100, $200 or $500/mo and currently has no five-hour limit. Business is $20/user/mo billed annually ($25 monthly). Or run the CLI, SDK or IDE extension on an API key at API rates, without the cloud features.
- 03
CursorBest if you want an AI editor with an agent built in: Cursor is a VS Code-style editor with its own agent, cloud agents and a CLI (run agent in any terminal). Free is $0 with limited agent and chat requests. Plus is $8/mo but only includes Grok models. Claude and other third-party models need Premium ($30/mo) or higher and are billed separately at API list price; Super is $100/mo and Ultra $200/mo. You don't have to choose, either: Claude Code's VS Code extension works in Cursor.
- 04
Google AntigravityBest free option from a big lab: Google Antigravity is an agent-first platform with an app, an IDE, editor extensions, an SDK and Antigravity CLI, a terminal agent built in Go that runs subagents in parallel. Google replaced Gemini CLI with Antigravity CLI for unpaid and Google One users on Jun 18, 2026, so this is now Google's free terminal agent. The Individual plan is $0 with a variety of agent models, unlimited Tab completions and command requests, and basic weekly rate limits. Google AI Pro ($19.99/mo in the US) raises the limits, adds a flexible AI credit pool and Gemini 4 Argon; Ultra starts at $99.99/mo. Companies on Google Cloud can buy it through Gemini Enterprise (Standard and Plus from $30/seat/mo) or pay as they go.
- 05
ClineBest open-source agent, and a way to keep Claude on your own key: Cline (Apache-2.0, about 70,500 GitHub stars) runs in VS Code, in the terminal and as a desktop app, edits files across your project, runs commands, uses MCP servers and asks for approval at each step. It's free for individual developers: you pay only for inference, either with your own API key (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, OpenRouter, local models and more) or through Cline at cost. Enterprise (custom pricing) adds SSO, an SLA and the JetBrains extension.
- 06
AiderBest minimal terminal pair programmer: Aider is free and open source (Apache-2.0, about 49,600 GitHub stars), edits files in your repo and commits each change to git, and works with almost any model on your own key, including Claude and local models. Development has slowed, though: the latest release is v0.86.2 (Feb 12, 2026) and the last commit to its GitHub repo was May 22, 2026.
How to choose
Want the most for the least? GitHub Copilot: Copilot CLI is on the free plan, and Pro at $10/mo still gets you Claude Sonnet 5.5. Already pay for ChatGPT? Codex is included from Free up, and Plus is $20/mo, the same as Claude Pro. Want an editor first and an agent second? Cursor (free to start; Claude models from Premium at $30/mo plus API usage). Want a free agentic IDE and terminal agent? Google Antigravity's Individual plan. Want open source and to pay only for tokens? Cline, or Aider if you live in the terminal. Hitting Claude Pro's limits but happy with Claude Code? Max 5x ($100/mo) or usage credits may be cheaper than switching.
Keep Claude's models, change the tool
Leaving Claude Code doesn't have to mean leaving Claude. GitHub Copilot Pro ($10/mo) includes Claude Sonnet 5.5, and Pro+ ($39/mo) adds Opus 5.5 and Fable. Cursor bills Claude models at API list price on Premium and up. Cline, Aider and OpenCode run Claude on your own Anthropic API key, so you pay per token (Sonnet 5.5 is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output). Zed can run Claude Agent as an external agent, which handles its own login and billing. The one thing none of these use is your Claude Pro or Max subscription: on a subscription, Claude Code is the way to spend it.
Also considered
Gemini CLI is still open source (Apache-2.0, about 107,000 GitHub stars) and still works with paid Gemini API keys and Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licenses, but unpaid and Google One users were moved to Antigravity CLI on Jun 18, 2026, and Google says it isn't optimized for Gemini 4 Argon. OpenCode is an open-source (MIT, about 216,000 GitHub stars) agent for the terminal, a desktop app and IDEs, with free models included or 75+ providers, and you can log in with a GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT Plus/Pro account; its optional Go plan is $10/mo ($40 for Go Plus) for open models. Zed is a fast open-source editor whose free Personal plan works with your own keys or external agents such as Claude Agent and Codex CLI; Pro is $10/mo. Windsurf, now Devin Desktop, has a Free plan with a light agent quota, Pro at $20/mo and Max at $200/mo. Kiro's free tier includes 50 credits with Claude Sonnet 4.5 and open-weight models; paid plans run from Pro ($20/mo) to Power ($200/mo).
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Claude Code?
GitHub Copilot for most people: Copilot CLI and agent mode are on the free plan, and Pro at $10/mo includes Claude Sonnet 5.5. If you already pay for ChatGPT, OpenAI Codex is the closest like-for-like agent, with Plus at $20/mo like Claude Pro. Pick Cursor for an AI editor, Google Antigravity for a free agentic IDE and CLI, and Cline or Aider for open source on your own API key.
Is there a free alternative to Claude Code?
Yes. GitHub Copilot Free (2,000 completions a month plus limited chat and agent use, including Copilot CLI), Google Antigravity's Individual plan (basic weekly rate limits), Codex on ChatGPT Free (GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app, subject to rollout) and Cursor Free all cost $0. Cline, Aider and OpenCode are free and open source, but you pay your model provider for tokens unless you use free models.
Can I use Claude models without Claude Code?
Yes. GitHub Copilot Pro ($10/mo) includes Claude Sonnet 5.5, and Pro+ ($39/mo) adds Claude Opus 5.5 and Fable. Cursor offers Claude on Premium ($30/mo) and up, billed at API list price. Cline, Aider and OpenCode work with your own Anthropic API key. None of them use your Claude Pro or Max subscription.
Is Codex cheaper than Claude Code?
At the entry level they're the same: ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are both $20/mo. Codex also has a $0 Free plan and an $8/mo Go plan for light use, while Claude Code isn't on Claude's Free plan. At the top, ChatGPT Pro is $100, $200 or $500/mo against Claude Max at $100 or $200/mo. Business seats are $20/user/mo billed annually on ChatGPT and $20/seat/mo billed annually on Claude Team Standard.
What happened to Gemini CLI?
Google replaced Gemini CLI with Antigravity CLI for unpaid and Google One users on Jun 18, 2026, when Gemini CLI and the Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions stopped serving those users and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Gemini CLI is still open source and keeps working with paid Gemini API keys and Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licenses. For a free Google terminal agent, use Antigravity CLI.
Can I use Claude Code inside Cursor or VS Code instead of switching?
Yes. Claude Code's extension works in VS Code and VS Code forks, including Cursor, and there's a plugin for JetBrains IDEs. It uses the same login and usage pool as the terminal. So you can keep Claude Code as your agent and change only the editor, or try Cursor's or Copilot's agent side by side.
