Is Claude Code free? What it costs in 2026
No, not on its own. Claude's Free plan doesn't include Claude Code: you get it with a paid Claude plan or by paying for API tokens. Below: every way to pay for it, how the usage limits work, and the free coding tools to use instead, all checked on vendor pages on Oct 18, 2026.
Facts and prices checked Oct 18, 2026 ยท no paid placements
Short answer: No. Claude's Free plan doesn't include Claude Code. The cheapest way in is Claude Pro at $20/mo ($17/mo billed annually), which includes Claude Code in the terminal, your IDE, the desktop app and the web. Max costs $100/mo (5x Pro usage) or $200/mo (20x). You can also skip the subscription and pay per token with a Claude Console (API) account, or through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry.
Claude plans and Claude Code access (checked Oct 18, 2026)
| Plan | Price | Claude Code? | Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No | Chat on web, desktop and mobile only. Anthropic's setup docs: "The free claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code access." |

| Max 5x | $100/mo (monthly only) | Yes | 5x Pro's usage per session, a weekly limit, priority access at busy times. Includes $100/mo of API credits for the Claude Platform, which can't be used in Claude Code. |
| Max 20x | $200/mo (monthly only) | Yes | 20x Pro's usage per session. Includes $200/mo of API credits, which also can't be used in Claude Code. |
| Team Standard | $25/seat/mo, or $20 billed annually (2 to 150 seats) | Yes, every seat | More usage than Pro, plus SSO, central billing and admin controls. |
| Team Premium | $125/seat/mo, or $100 billed annually | Yes | 5x the usage of a Standard seat. |
| Enterprise | $20/seat/mo billed annually (20-seat minimum) plus usage at API rates | Yes, included with the seat on new and self-serve plans | Admin-set spend limits, SCIM, audit logs, role-based access. |
| API (Claude Console) | Pay per token: Sonnet 5.5 $2 in / $10 out, Opus 5.5 $4 / $20, Haiku 5.5 $0.10 / $0.50 per million tokens | Yes | No subscription. Billed per token to your organization, with spend limits in the Console. Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry bill through your cloud account. |
Prices are in USD and exclude tax. Max is billed monthly only, and app-store pricing can differ. Haiku 5.5 prices are for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. On every subscription plan, Claude chat and Claude Code draw from the same usage pool.
How Claude Code usage limits work
Every Claude plan has a usage limit that resets on a rolling five-hour session window, and paid plans add a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time assigned to your account. Claude chat, the desktop app and Claude Code all draw from the same pool, so a long coding session leaves less for chat. There's no fixed message count: it depends on the model, how long the conversation is and which features you use. Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for Fable. Claude Code warns you as you get close. When you hit a limit you can wait for the reset, upgrade (Pro to Max 5x, Max 5x to Max 20x), turn on usage credits on a paid plan, which bill at standard API rates, or switch to a Console account and buy API credits.
Subscription or API: which costs less?
Anthropic's Claude Code docs put the average cost across enterprise deployments at about $13 per developer per active day and $150 to $250 per developer per month, with 90% of users under $30 per active day. If you code most days, a subscription will usually cost less: Pro is $20/mo and Max starts at $100/mo. The API makes more sense for occasional use, scripted or CI runs, or a company that wants per-token billing and spend caps in the Console. One gotcha: if an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code uses that key instead of your subscription, and you pay API rates.
Is there a free trial, student discount or free credit?
Anthropic doesn't list a free trial of Pro or Max, and its help center says there are no standing discounts on individual plans, though it occasionally runs limited-time promotions. Eligible nonprofits can get discounted Team and Enterprise plans. Students usually get access through their school: Anthropic sells university-wide Education plans that cover students, faculty and staff, and student-run Claude Builder Clubs share resources like API credits with members. On the API side, Anthropic says new users get a small amount of free credit to test the API, without publishing the amount.
Where you can run Claude Code
The terminal on macOS, Windows and Linux; VS Code, Cursor and other VS Code forks; JetBrains IDEs like IntelliJ and PyCharm; the Claude desktop app (paid plans); and the web, including the Claude apps for iOS and Android. One login and one usage pool cover all of them.
Free alternatives to Claude Code, compared
- 01
GitHub CopilotGitHub Copilot Free ($0): up to 2,000 code completions a month plus limited chat and agent usage, including agent mode and Copilot CLI, on auto model selection only. Verified students get Copilot Student for free. Pro is $10/mo. Handing tasks to third-party agents like Claude by Anthropic and OpenAI Codex (preview) needs Pro+ ($39/mo) or Max ($100/mo).
- 02
Google AntigravityGoogle Antigravity Individual ($0): an IDE, app and CLI with a range of agent models, unlimited Tab completions and command requests, and basic weekly rate limits. Google moved unpaid Gemini CLI users to Antigravity CLI on Jun 18, 2026, so this is now Google's free terminal agent. Google AI Pro ($19.99/mo in the US) raises the limits.
- 03
OpenAI CodexOpenAI Codex on ChatGPT Free ($0): Codex for quick coding tasks, with GPT-6 Luna at Standard speed in the desktop app (subject to rollout). Go is $8/mo. Plus ($20/mo, the same as Claude Pro) lists Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension and on iOS. The Codex CLI is open source (Apache-2.0) and also runs with an API key at API rates.
- 04
CursorCursor Free ($0): Agent, Chat and Tab completions with limited usage on Cursor's own models (Grok and Composer). No Claude models on Free or Plus ($8/mo): those need Premium ($30/mo) and are billed at API list price.
- 05
ClineCline: free and open source (Apache-2.0, about 70,000 GitHub stars) for individual developers, in VS Code, the terminal or a desktop app. You pay only for inference: bring your own key (Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter and more), pay Cline at cost, or run local models through Ollama or LM Studio.
- 06
AiderAider: free, open-source (Apache-2.0) pair programmer for the terminal that edits your files and auto-commits each change to git, with about 49,600 GitHub stars. Bring a key for almost any model, including local ones. Development has slowed: the latest release is v0.86.2 (Feb 12, 2026) and the last commit was May 22, 2026.
