v0 vs Bolt.new: which should builders use?
Both turn a prompt into a working full-stack web app that you can publish and sync to GitHub. v0 by Vercel defaults to Next.js, adds databases through the Vercel Marketplace, and deploys to Vercel. Bolt.new by StackBlitz runs in your browser on WebContainers, comes with its own database, hosting and domains (Bolt Cloud), and builds iOS and Android apps through Expo.
| Made by | Vercel | StackBlitz |
|---|---|---|
| Default stack | Next.js, React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui (other frameworks work, but Next.js is the most reliable) | JavaScript web frameworks with a Node.js backend; PHP and Python backends aren't supported |
| Mobile apps | Mobile-responsive web apps; a v0 iOS app lets you build from your phone | iOS and Android apps through the Expo integration, with publishing to TestFlight, the App Store and Google Play |
| Database and backend | One-click Supabase, Neon, Upstash or Vercel Blob through the Vercel Marketplace | Built-in Bolt Database with auth, file storage and server functions on every plan; Supabase on Pro and Teams |
| Hosting | Deploys to Vercel with preview and production deployments. v0 isn't included in a Vercel plan, and Vercel's free Hobby plan is non-commercial | Built-in hosting on a free bolt.host address. Free: 10 GB and 333,333 requests a month, hard cap. Pro: 30 GB and 1M requests, with pay-as-you-go above that |
| Custom domains | Managed through the connected Vercel project | Paid plans only; buy or connect a domain inside Bolt |
| GitHub | Creates a private repo, commits each chat to its own working branch, and publishes through pull requests | Import or create a repo; commits sync automatically; branches are merged in GitHub |
| Free plan | $0 with a 7 messages/day limit; new users get $5 in one-time credits | $0 with 300K tokens a day and 1M a month, Standard agent only, Made in Bolt badge |
| Paid plans | Plus $30/user/mo ($30 of monthly credits plus $2 of daily login credits per user); Business $100/user/mo with training opt-out by default; Enterprise custom | Pro from $25/mo (10M tokens a month; bigger token tiers cost more); Teams $30/member/mo; 10% off on annual plans; Custom for enterprises |
| How usage is billed | Credits at per-model token rates: v0 Mini $0.20/$1.20, v0 Pro $2/$10, v0 Max $5/$25 per 1M input/output tokens | Tokens; most usage comes from syncing your project files, so bigger projects use more per message |
| Unused allowance | Monthly credits roll over to the next cycle and expire after 65 days | Paid tokens roll over for one extra month while you stay subscribed |
| Models and agents | Pick v0 Mini, Pro, Max or Max Fast per chat; ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers can bill eligible responses to their ChatGPT plan | Standard and Max agents (Max needs a paid plan); Bolt picks the model behind each agent |
| Code ownership | Vercel doesn't own the generated code; export it or sync it to GitHub | Your code to use for any legal purpose, including commercial |
| Pricing (approx.) | Free (7 messages/day); Plus $30/user/mo; Business $100/user/mo | Free tier; Pro ~$25/mo; Teams ~$30/member/mo |

How the pricing works
Both charge for AI work by usage, so the plan price buys you an allowance. v0 Plus is $30 per user per month and includes $30 of monthly credits plus $2 of free daily credits when you log in. Each model has its own token rate, from v0 Mini ($0.20 in and $1.20 out per million tokens) to v0 Max ($5 and $25), and paid plans can buy extra credits at any time. Bolt Pro starts at $25 a month for 10M tokens, and larger token tiers cost more. On Bolt, the usual way to get more tokens is a higher tier, because token reloads are only offered on the top monthly Pro tier and annual Pro plans. One more cost to know: v0 isn't part of a Vercel subscription, so a Vercel Pro seat ($20/mo) is a separate bill.
Which free plan goes further?
v0 Free caps you at 7 messages a day, and new sign-ups get $5 in one-time credits. Bolt Free gives you 300K tokens a day and 1M a month on the Standard agent, plus hosting on a bolt.host address. The catch is that Bolt Free sites show a Made in Bolt badge and go offline for the rest of the cycle once the account uses 10 GB or 333,333 requests in a month. v0 apps deploy to Vercel, and Vercel's free Hobby plan is for personal, non-commercial use only.
Pick v0 if…
You want a Next.js and React codebase that lives on Vercel, with preview deployments and publishing through pull requests to your own GitHub repo. It's also the pick if you want to choose the model per task, from v0 Mini to v0 Max, or you already pay for ChatGPT Plus or Pro and want to use that plan.
Pick Bolt.new if…
You want the database, auth, file storage, hosting and domains in one place with no other accounts, you need an iOS or Android app through Expo, or you want the cheaper paid plan for one person ($25/mo Bolt Pro vs $30/user/mo v0 Plus).
Our verdict
For a solo builder, Bolt is the cheaper all-in-one: $25/mo Pro, a built-in database and hosting, and a path to iOS and Android through Expo. v0 is the better pick when the app should be a Next.js codebase on Vercel, shipped through GitHub pull requests and preview deployments. Both have free plans, but v0 Free stops at 7 messages a day.
