What happens when you hit Claude Code's weekly limit
Claude Code stops taking new messages until your weekly limit resets, unless you turn on usage credits (billed at standard API rates) or upgrade. A response already in progress can finish with a small capped wrap-up allowance.

The two limits
Claude Pro ($20/mo) and Max (Max 5x $100/mo, Max 20x $200/mo) each have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit. Max 5x gets 5x and Max 20x gets 20x Pro's per-session allowance. Max also has a separate weekly limit for Fable. Both limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code, so chat in the Claude app counts too. Anthropic doesn't publish the limits in tokens or messages.
What you see when you hit it
You'll see warnings as you approach the limit. If Claude Code is mid-response, it may keep going briefly and show “Usage limit reached · wrapping up” so it can finish the step instead of stopping halfway. That wrap-up allowance is small, capped and counts toward your weekly limit. On Pro it applies up to once per weekly usage period; on Max it can apply each time you reach a five-hour session limit, within your weekly limit.
When it resets
The weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week assigned to your account, no matter when you subscribed or started using Claude. Check Settings › Usage for the next reset, or run /status in Claude Code to see your remaining allocation.
Your options
1) Wait for the reset. 2) Turn on usage credits to keep going on your Pro or Max plan after a five-hour or weekly limit; they bill at standard API rates. 3) Upgrade: Pro → Max 5x, or Max 5x → Max 20x if you hit limits most weeks. 4) Switch to a Claude Console account and buy API credits for heavy sprints. Note: the monthly API credits included with Max can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps, even for extra usage.
To never pay past the limit
Decline the API credit option when it appears, and log in to Claude Code only with your Pro or Max credentials, without adding Console credentials. Then Claude Code uses only your plan allocation and won't prompt you to use API credits.

Does Claude chat use my Claude Code limit?
Yes. The limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code, so all activity in both counts against them.
How many messages is the weekly limit?
Not published. Anthropic gives multiples (Max 5x and 20x of Pro per session) but not absolute numbers.
Can Anthropic add other caps?
Yes. Anthropic says it may limit usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at its discretion.
