Clerk vs Supabase Auth: which should builders use?

Both handle sign-up, sign-in and sessions for web and mobile apps. Clerk is a dedicated auth product with prebuilt UI components and Organizations for B2B. Supabase Auth is part of the open-source Supabase stack (Postgres, Storage, Edge Functions) and ties into Row Level Security. Lovable and Bolt integrate Supabase natively; Clerk documents first-party setup for Lovable and agent skills for Cursor.

How the pricing units differ

Clerk bills Monthly Retained Users, not MAU. A signup who never returns after the first day does not count toward MRU, and Hobby includes 50K MRU per app. Past 50K on Pro, overage starts at $0.02 per MRU per month with volume discounts. Supabase Auth bills MAU: Free includes 50K, Pro and Team include 100K, then $0.00325 per MAU. Supabase Free also pauses projects after a week of inactivity and caps you at two active projects; Clerk Hobby does not pause apps.

Auth-only vs full backend

Pick Clerk when you want polished prebuilt sign-in UI, Organizations for B2B multi-tenancy, and auth that is separate from your database. Pick Supabase Auth when you want auth, Postgres, Storage and Edge Functions in one stack with Row Level Security enforcing who can read each row. You can also combine them: Supabase documents Clerk as a third-party auth provider so Clerk session tokens can drive Supabase RLS.

Pick Clerk if…

You want drop-in sign-in UI, Organizations for a multi-tenant SaaS, MFA/passkeys on a paid plan, or you're wiring auth into a Next.js / React app with Cursor (Clerk Skills) or Lovable using Clerk's documented guide.

Pick Supabase if…

You're shipping with Lovable or Bolt (native Supabase), you want SQL + RLS authorization in one place, you may self-host later, or you want auth included with Free/Pro Postgres instead of a separate auth vendor.

Our verdict

For AI-built apps in 2026, default to Supabase Auth when the app already uses Supabase (especially on Lovable or Bolt) so RLS stays the source of truth. Pick Clerk when auth UX and B2B Organizations matter more than bundling with the database — or use both, with Clerk as the identity provider and Supabase RLS reading Clerk JWTs.
